Take a peek behind closed doors in our December 3rd Gates & Gables House Tour

Join us for our biennial tour of private Andover homes.  Eight Andover homeowners will open their doors to guests Saturday, December 3, from 10:00 to 4:00 pm.  The tour starts with the Historical Society’s home, the 1820s Amos Blanchard House, and continues on through town.  Pick up your ticket and tour guide and map at the Society and head off to discover a different side of Andover!  Call 978-475-2236 to information.  Tickets can be purchased online via our secure website.

Watch for these signs around town Saturday, December 3!

Events here, there, and everywhere… in Andover!

This week, Andover Day on Saturday, October 3rd is the big news and we hope you’ll join us! After many months of renovations and improvements, Main Street will be officially reopened with a day-long celebration of music, food, and of course, community spirit! Be sure to check out the Historical Society’s Main Street exhibit as part of the activities that day.  You can learn more about Andover Day at the ABCA website. Come join the celebration!

Count Down to Gates & Gables!

Tour eight private Andover homes, enjoy discounts at local restaurants, and afternoon refreshments. Tickets are $35 in advance, through the Historical Society office and at the Andover Book Store through the close the business Friday, September 25th and online at www.andoverhistorical.org until midnight. The day of the tour, tickets are $40 and can be purchased at the Historical Society and at our guide/map pick up location at South Church, 41 Central Street, Andover.

Gates & Gables Tickets On Sale Now!

Tickets are now available for the 2009 Gates and Gables House Tour, Saturday, September 26th, 10:00 am to 4:00 p.m. Gates and Gables will treat visitors to an inside look at eight private Andover homes displaying an intriguing diversity of architectural, collecting, and decorating styles. The exciting range of architectural styles and periods add to the charm of this year’s tour.

Houses on the tour date from the mid 1700s through a 20th century contemporary that just received a 21st “green” make-over.  This special home features solar panels, wind turbines, and a geothermal heating and cooling system.   Another home on the tour is celebrating its 250th birthday this year.  Built in 1759 as a small two-room starter home, the property now includes a two-story house with two period-style additions, barns, outbuildings.  You won’t want to miss the surprise landscape feature nestled into the beautiful grounds!

Mark Your Calendar! Gates & Gables is Coming!

Mark your calendar for the Historical Society’s biannual Gates and Gables House Tour, Saturday, September 26th, 10:00 am to 4:00 p.m. Gates and Gables will treat visitors to an inside look at private Andover homes displaying an intriguing diversity of architectural, collecting, and decorating styles. The exciting range of architectural styles and periods add to the charm of this year’s tour.

One of the premier houses on the tour is celebrating its 250th birthday this year. Built in 1759 as a small two-room starter home, the property now includes a two-story house with two period-style additions, barns, outbuildings. The original two rooms are today used as a sitting room and dining room. The original blacksmith shop, described as early as 1808, is incorporated into the house as a family room.

Annual House Tour in nearby Reading, MA

This year, the Friends of Reading Public Library, in partnership with the Reading Historical Commission, invite AHS members and friends to join them in their Annual House Tour. “A Peek into the Past” will take place on Sunday, May 3 from 1-5 p.m. And, as the title suggests, this year’s homes are historic ones, many hailing from the mid-to-late 1800s and including ones designed by Horace Wadlin, a well known 19th century Reading architect.

Starting in early April, tickets will be available at the Reading Public Library (64 Middlesex Avenue, Reading, MA) at $25 per person. While you and your friends enjoy a wonderful afternoon viewing some local architectural gems, you’ll also be helping out the library.
