Andover Stories – August 12, 2010

Friday, August 13th, 2010

This week’s Andover Story, “Andover company that started as Tyer Rubber produced Converse shoes, NHL puck.” was written by Mike Simo. Tyer Rubber was a major manufacturing employer for over 100 years. The Society is fortunate to have in its collection photographs of the Tyer Rubber factory, along with examples of some of the company’s products. Tyer Rubber materials include sneakers, a hot water bottle, and a few rubber postcards that the company produced to show the quality of their product. To learn more about Tyer Rubber company and its founder Henry G. Tyer, follow the link to the Andover Townsman website.

Today’s Andover Story was researched and written by Katie Gohn. Katie is new to the Andover Stories project, one of three interns who are working on stories this summer.  Katie will be a junior at Boston University this fall where she is double majoring in political science and history.  This week’s story, Presidential Visits to Andover, from Washington to Bush, is the perfect combination of Katie’s interests.  We look forward to introducing you to our writers as they join the Andover Stories team.  Follow this link to read Katie’s story on The Andover Townsman Online.

Andover Stories: June 24, 2010

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Today’s Andover Stories column on Andover’s Private Schools was written by Stories Chair Gail Ralston. As a Phillips Academy employee for many years, Gail is uniquely qualified to write this article.

Here’s a taste of Gail’s article, which continues on to discuss Andover’s other private schools, some you might know and others you may never had heard about before.

Most familiar is Phillips Academy, founded in 1778 by Samuel Phillips Jr. to educate “youth from every quarter” in the classical tradition. While today the academy educates those of high school age, in its early days students ranged from 7 to over 30! Abbot Academy, the first incorporated school in Massachusetts for girls only, opened in 1829.
