Summer is in full swing so that must mean it’s time to plan for Christmas!
Or at least let the decorating planning begin!
For the past two years, the Historical Society has exhibited a display of history-inspired decorated Christmas trees during the month of December. Individuals, groups, social clubs, and town departments have decorated trees in the past, including Andover Fire & Rescue Personnel, and Memorial Hall Library, and the Friends of the Andover Senior Center.
The Historical Society provides the trees, and an inspiration object from our collection to display next to the tree. As a decorator, you provide all the ornaments, garland and tree decor – but that doesn’t mean you need to use traditional christmas ornaments!
For example, one of our volunteers chose a patchwork pocket as her inspiration and then used small dolls dressed in old fashioned clothing, paper stars, and spools of thread to decorate a tree. (You can see that tree here: http://andoverhistorical.org/blog/?p=1879) This year, the Fire Department was inspired by an antique baseball bat in our collection and their tree was decorated in with modern and vintage Red Sox paraphernalia, baseball cards, and even Baby Ruth candy bars. You can see more details about our holiday exhibit and programs at www.andoverhistorical.org/holiday.
We’d love to have the participation of more community members and groups this year and we’re holding an ‘Intro to Decorating’ meeting where you can learn more!
