Stories From The Trails History Hike:  Pole Hill

Sunday, Sept 12, 1:00 – 3:00 pm

After two great hikes earlier this summer that were attended by a total of more than 80 hikers, The Historical Society and the Andover Trails Committee are teaming up one final time this year to deliver the third in a free 3-part series.

Postcard of the Shawsheen River from the Society's collection

Jane Cairns from the Historical Society will share colorful stories tied to Pole Hill and the surrounding area. This hike consists of relatively easy walking and will take about 2 hours. Meet at the bottom of Pole Hill Drive, where it meets Tewksbury Street in Andover. Ample parking is available on Pole Hill Drive (please be considerate of driveways and private property when parking).

Here’s a sneak preview of what you’ll see and hear about on the hike: Up river from the Ballardvale Dam was “the Shawsheen Grove” – a popular tourist destination in the later years of the 19th century, where visitors could picnic, dance under the stars, swim, or paddle rented boats and canoes on the river. The Boston and Maine Railroad promoted day excursions from Boston, but by 1893, the crowds began to be large and unruly. A deadly “duel” at the Grove in August 1900, and the sensational murder trial that followed, threatened to put an end to the merry-making, but the 20th century brought new attractions including the dance hall “Parker’s on the Shawsheen” and the Serio family’s “Miami Boathouse.”

Andover Historical Society Makes List of 1,000 Great Places!

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

The Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism just released its list of 1,000 Great Places in Massachusetts.  Two Andover attractions, the Andover Historical Society and the Addison Gallery of American Art made the list.  The list is designed to promote tourism in Massachusetts, and we’re hoping that being listed will promote Andover as a travel destination.

There’s so much to do and see here!  Visit the Historical Society and the weekly Farmer’s Market.  Anticipate the reopening of the new Addison Gallery.  Explore the Phillips Academy campus.  Stroll Main Street and sample the shops and restaurants (don’t miss the Society’s exhibit in CVS’s window!).  Settle into a comfortable chair at Memorial Hall Library and let a book and your imagination take you anywhere.  Or visit the Andover Book Store which has been a part of Andover since 1809.   Go for a hike in Harold Parker State Park, or along any of the Andover Village Improvement Society or Conservation Commission trails.  Visit a farm stand in West Andover, or one of Andover’s many houses of worship.

Come to the Market this Saturday!

Friday, July 9th, 2010

We are entering the third week of the Andover Farmers’ Market and there is much more to come.  Make sure to stop by this Saturday and visit your favorite vendors Rain or Shine!

With plenty of family friendly activities, new and returning vendors, and a free raffle you are sure to have a good time.    This week’s Free Raffle item is a bunch of Swiss Chard donated by Joseph’s Garden.  Sign-up to win at the Andover Historical Society tent.

This week Chris Nassise of The Green Woodshop will be demonstrating furniture making in the Andover Historical Society woodshop.  Stop in to say hello and watch as this skillful craftsman demonstrate his trade.

Leyla Schimmel and the Pumpkins and Poultry 4-H group will be bringing special visitors to the market including some friendly chickens and goats.   This group promotes chemical and cruelty free farming.  These 4-H kids help plant and harvest the food they eat and know that food doesn’t just come from a box or a can.  In a  world over-abundant with processed food it’s important to support the local farmer and buy organic produce.

Silwia Lepicki, the Farmers’ Market intern, has prepared a special craft in honor of our special furry and feathery visitors called “Chicken or the Egg?”.  Family’s and children are welcome to stop in the barn and check out this unique and fun craft.  Also, visit the Andover High School students Facepainting on the Porch.

If your in the mood for a sweet treat we’re sure Honey Flour Bakerycan satisfy your craving.  Jen Warren, Andover Farmers’ Market vendor was featured in the Andover Townsman this week.   Check out the article!

With so much to do at the Market which surrounds the historic 1819 Amos Blanchard house, home of the Andover Historical Society, you don’t want to miss it!

If you are interested in receiving the weekly email newsletter please email ddesmet@andoverhistorical.org or stop by the market and sign-up at the Andover Historical Society tent.
